in wheel motors our next generation drive technology that places motors in automobile wheels this technology improves automobile safety environmental impact and driving comfort a great deal of motor miniaturization research is taking place but motors with sufficient drive performance have been too large and commercialization has yet to be achieved nskzo hub motors achieve driving performance targets while reducing motor size let's look at how this is accomplished nskzo hub motors use two motors both rotating in the same direction for high gear operations when motor bee's rotation directions switches a one-way clutch stops the planetary carrier switching from high to low gear a hub unit bearing with a built in speed reducer delivers the torque to the wheels using a Sun gear pinion gear and ring gear integrated into the hub unit this transmission mechanism makes it possible for small motors to provide a large amount of drive torque and sufficient maximum speed low gear provides faster acceleration than high gear after starting in low gear the motor switches to high gear and accelerates until it reaches maximum speed use of this transmission improves operating efficiency to increase driving range wheel hub motors can be used independent of vehicle body structure so they can be used with evolving drive types such as a TV TV and SPD nsk is continuing to develop products that contribute to the future of automotive technology you
– [Glen] 2019 could be the year that electric vehicles take over the streets. With new developments in not just aesthetic features like comfort and design, but huge advancements in range and power, the vehicles on the market today are on another level. I'm Glen, and today, we're bringing you the top 10 electric vehicles to check out in 2019. (futuristic music) (turns into relaxing guitar music) – [Woman] Number 10. – [Glen] The Rumble has been in development over the last three years, but a successful Indiegogo campaign last year raised over $28,000 and meant that consumers could finally get their hands on one. Rumble Motors label this bike as having a cafe racer style design, so they wanted to get a lightweight scooter optimized for speed and handling rather than comfort. As a result, the Rumble's max speed is 40 miles per hour, and it weighs in at just 231 pounds. This makes it perfect for quick trips or a short commute. Priced at $3,490, the Rumble is surprisingly affordable. (bright music) – [Woman] Number nine. – [Glen] At first glance, the Harley Davidson LiveWire almost doesn't look like an electric vehicle. The gorgeous frame made of lightweight aluminum, state of the art touchscreen display, and Scorcher sports tires are what catches the eye. The giveaway is, of course, the bright silver magnetic electric motor nestled beneath the battery. The motor is placed there to lower the center of gravity for easier handling. The LiveWire tries to promote itself as the world's most connected motorcycle. And motorheads can check bike stats, like battery charge status and riding activity, using the Harley Davidson app. The newest 2020 model isn't expected to hit the streets until August of this year, but pre-orders are available starting at $29,799. – [Woman] Number eight. – [Glen] Porsche's first all electric four seat sports car, the Taycan, previously called the Mission E, is set to begin production this year. Upon first glance, there's no mistaking that the Taycan is a Porsche. It's general design, the dimensions, and sleek aesthetic, are all typical features of the German manufacturer. It has a very clean design with a low front end. An attractive air curtain guides air around the front wheels under the four-point headlights, and it has rear-hinged back doors for easy access to the two rear seats. The innovative interior features a new type of holographic display and bucket seats with a sporty design. Porsche plans to produce 20,000 cars per year, and claims it already has enough pre-orders to cover all units for its first year of production. With an estimated price of $230,000, that's impressive. – [Woman] Number seven. – [Glen] The Tesla Semi driver's seat looks more like a train control room than a traditional truck driver's seat. The Semi has a center driver position, making it easier than ever for a truck driver to have full visibility and control. The truck comes with Tesla Autopilot and two digital screens either side of the wheel, so that the driver can see all the latest stats. Not only is it functional, but it's comfortable. The driver can fully stand up inside the control room, and even store their bags in either an airplane style overhead locker or the little truck hidden in the nose of the truck. The 300 mile range version costs $150,000, while the 500 mile range version costs $180,000. However, Tesla claims that the Semi provides over $200,000 in fuel savings, so it can virtually pay for itself within two years of ownership. – [Woman] Number six. – [Glen] Looking somewhat like a modified Fiat 500 is the Sono Sion. The little dots visible across the car, on its sides, roof, rear, and the hood are solar cells. That's because this is the first mass produced electric car that can charge its battery using solar power. Same as the Rumble, the Sono Sion is another project that came to life thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. It raised over $600,000 back in 2016 and promised to deliver a family-friendly car with at least 150 miles of range. Pricing for the Sion starts at $18,200, excluding the solar battery pack. – [Woman] Number five. – [Glen] The Fisker EMotion EV gives off a Tesla-type vibe but with a more aggressive air. The front end's futuristic form almost appears like the car is snarling, ready to hit the road. It can go zero to 60 in less than three seconds, putting the Porsche's Taycan 3.5 seconds to shame. Not only is it faster, but over 100 grand cheaper as the Fisker starts at just $129,000. It features a new battery, which is a solid-state lithium metal design, allowing the car to be operated in weather as cold as minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as giving the car a range of over 400 miles. The Fisker also comes equipped for style and comfort with butterfly doors and a four or five seat option. What truly sets this vehicle apart is the technology on offer with an advanced autonomous driving system and not one, not two, but three display screens at the front from which to control all this. – [Woman] Number four. – [Glen] Looking at the Zbee, it's easy to imagine that 20 years from now these might be the new kings of the road in Thailand. The Zbee looks remarkably like a traditional tuk-tuk with its three wheels and scooter-like mobility. The vehicle sits up to three people including the driver and can load up to 370 pounds for a range of almost 50 miles. It only costs around a dime for a six mile drive. That makes it perfect for quick, easy trips, especially for zipping around in urban areas. The company's primary target is the major taxi companies in India. Zbee's prices fluctuate depending on the region. They are currently being sold in Sweden for around $9,600, while in India, the cost is around $4,200. – [Woman] Number three. – [Glen] Unveiled as the first luxury electric super bike, the SORA by Lito looks like something right out of the Tron video game. It features thick handlebars, an aircraft grade aluminum frame, and a showpiece round front headlight. Powered by 12 kilowatt hour lithium polymer battery modules, the SORA has a range of 124 miles in the city or 62 miles on the highway and can take around nine hours for charging. In many ways, it's a beefed up version of the Rumble e-bike. The SORA can reach a top speed of 118 miles per hour and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just under four seconds. The base model of the SORA starts at $77,000, while the Signature Series will set you back $104,000. – [Woman] Number two. – [Glen] The TRIPL falls somewhere in between a cargo bike and an ice resurfacer. It's an electric vehicle used for transporting goods like small packages for that last mile. Looking at just the front, it seems a bit like a mini truck with it's thick hood and two straight facing front headlights. With two wheels up front and only one at the rear, it seems as though it might topple forward with a heavy load, but the Danish manufacturer says it can handle a weight of 440 pounds. The TRIPL has a range of 62 miles and a max speed of 27 miles per hour. Its small size means it can move through car-free zones and offers a variety of use cases from facility management to construction site tool transport. The standard battery takes eight hours to charge, but TRIPL also has a super fast charger that only takes 4 1/2 hours. Pricing on this model is around $14,000. – [Woman] Number one. – [Glen] The ETT Raker looks more like a DIY project than a high-end electric scooter. The eye is immediately drawn to the central frame which has cut out geometric shapes and bold color. It looks completely different from other electric scooters on the market. Running on a 72 volt lithium-ion battery, the ETT Raker has a 70 mile range and a top speed of 28 miles per hour. The scooter is lightweight at just 165 pounds, and a standard charge only takes five hours. One of the particularly fun things about owning an ETT Raker is that you can 3D print a wide range of accessories, like a cup holder or a storage compartment. It's practical, too. If one of the bike's plastic parts needs replacing, you can do it from home. Priced at $4,450, it shows how far electric vehicles have come. – This episode of Minds Eye Design is brought to you by Ztylus Stinger, an emergency escape tool that can save your life with a sharp razor to cut your seatbelt, a two stage spring-loaded window punch, and can even be used a phone charger in your car. what's up everybody Matt Moran here for another car review this is of course the Tesla Model 3 performance huge thanks to Sophie on of redline reviews for graciously allowing me to review his Tesla Model 3 here for you guys today so about the Model 3 well I mean there's been so much coverage I'm sure you probably know everything about this vehicle already but if for some reason you happen to not know everything about this then I'm gonna go over most of the basics and cover this like a normal car review while still highlighting many of the very unique features here of the Tesla because it is so much different than any other vehicle I've ever reviewed in so many ways but anyway first thing up right up front here I think it's you know a very unique front end but I think it's pretty good-looking I mean these things are all over the place now so I've gotten used to the looks and I think it's it's looking better to me now I still don't love that kind of the upper part of the front bumper there in the middle how it kind of juts out a little bit more it gives it a little bit more of a nose than a normal vehicle has but I still really love these headlamps it kind of has an Aston Martin vibe to me and that's kind of the influence I feel from this front end is a little bit more a samar and a little more expensive and high-end looking and I think it's a really cool looker these full LED headlamps I also love the little arrow curtains you have there in the corners of the front bumper and a nice little touch they're also coming down to the sides here the performance version gets these large 20-inch wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires which is an awesome combo and but these wheels really nicely fill out these wheel wells and so great looking wheels and then other things going on the sides you know you kind of notice it's proportioned a little bit more differently than other sedans and even other like hatchbacks and things like that so it's it's a very interesting way that it kind of tapers down towards the rear there and you about very very short a trunk lid area and then going out back there you know it's more simple designs there but I really like the taillights I think you know there again pretty minimalistic but look good and I also really like how you have a little bit of a lip there on the trunk lid and so it kind of gives it a little more interesting appearances than you have from you know it's a normal square boxy trunk on many sedans these days and so I really appreciate they kind of did make it a little more stylistic than they probably needed but I think it looks really good and then you just have the Tesla badge in the dual motor badge there and that's it now this one being a performance should have a carbon fiber little lip on top of the trunk lid there but this one doesn't have it yet so if you I'm still waiting for Tesla to ship it to them so that's just one of the quirks of Tesla is you don't get all of your vehicle whenever you buy it so he's still waiting on that but you normally would have that now it also kind of spice up the backend here on the performance one specifically and so overall I think it's a very good look I think these days they're becoming so common that it does blend in especially in some of the you know less bold colors but here with it more colorful you know blues and reds and stuff I think it really stands out nicely and looks great whereas from the interior of the tesla model Storyville it is completely different than any other interior I have ever reviewed it really you know takes a little getting used to but it is pretty wild so first stuff sitting that nice seat that is one thing that's pretty traditional and although it's not traditional material it looks like leather but it's actually this like vinyl type material and it's like super white and super soft they're like marshmallowy looking and as feeling they feel like you're sitting on marshmallows they're just really great seats and just so so soft and comfortable and then they have the typical adjustments here nothing super advanced you have lumbar adjustment and then you know the basic adjustments and that's it so noticeable bolstering I know you know since this is the performance model it would be nice to have something with a little bit of a sporty or bolster especially for the torso it's a little wider than I would like for a sport model for again a normal you know daily driver commuter vehicle this is fine of course it's gonna fit all body types what I do is that was a little sporty ER last support though is pretty nicely bolstered and feels really good but these seats are not unique to the performance version you get the same seats regardless of what model you get but anyway I really really love them though and they're also heated here in the model three but not cold or you know ventilated so that's the only downside to them but you know it's still a very nice seat next to the steering wheel here which is a little bit of a thicker but a smaller wheel it's a pretty small rim but really thick and chunky it's almost as thick as a BMW M wheel actually down here in the lower portions but on the upper part here it's got a nice tight regroup all those a little bit of a chunkier ninety-three but feels really good and then you have a little tendency notches and then you have these two wheels here on the wheel itself and so they also can rock the left and right but those control basically everything like you only have a turn signal stock and then the gearshift stock everything else is controlled through this screen and so like even if you want to adjust the steering wheel or anything like the mirrors that is all done here with these little wheels on the steering wheel which is kind of crazy and so that's it as far as traditional car stuff you know you're looking forward there are no gauges you just have your little air vent that it's like a very narrow slit that just runs the entire length of the dashboard here and is very interesting so I mean because they you have an excellent view forward coming over to the center this does everything so you have this huge screen I don't even know the exact sizing of it but it's massive here bigger than any other screen outside of I think you know the Model S which has a bigger more vertical screen but I really like the way this is just so high resolution and looks very very cool it's also important to note that I have never played with a Tesla Model 3 until today I've never used this screen so this is literally my first impressions as a newcomer to this and it's actually it looks overwhelming when you first are looking at it but then once you've actually started using it and you're messing with it it's actually very easy it's actually nicely simplified I think this is easier to understand than even like the BMW idrive system and some other you know infotainment systems out there these days so you have your basic car controls here on the left hand side that's also where it will show you your speed readout as well as the speed limit your charge all the type of stuff and that's very cool that's also how you control like your windshield wipers now thankfully it's all automatics you don't every time it starts running you don't have to sit here and hit it you can just leave it on auto and it'll you know turn them on whenever it senses the rain which is great and then you have just it dominates this screen with this massive like Google Maps display here and it see a satellite and it looks really high-resolution it's very responsive to I mean all my pinching and swiping stuff it all picks it up very very quickly and while we're on that map part here I can also mention you know it's very cool as far as this navigate system so you don't get any kind of apple carplay or Android auto and the only thing I can complain about with that is like you can't runways so like having live alerts as far as you know debris on the road or police or construction those types of things you don't get because you don't get apple carplay Android auto otherwise though and Sophie on said this as well with his ownership experience here is that you know he doesn't miss not having carplay really because this navigation is so easy to use we just type it in is a very quick responsive touchscreen and but it's really cool because you know it's all tied into the supercharger network here the Tesla has which is we really sets them apart from other electric vehicles with just the massive network so that you can go anywhere in the continental United States and be able to get there you know the plenty of chargers when they're you know without inconveniencing you too much although you do have to wait at a charger but anyway so when you navigate like for example I'm navigating from Virginia here where we are to PNC Park which is in Pittsburgh which is where I'm from and it'll you know sit there and it takes it a good thirty Seconds to a minute to calculate all this stuff at least where I met with my current service level of you know the LTE and on that you know but it figures out okay you need to stop once is how long you're gonna stop for this but your battery level is gonna be whenever you do stop and whenever you get to your destination this is how much battery you'll have left it's just it's brilliant it's really cool cuz you don't think about it at all it just does it all for you and that is very cool to have Allah and of course with the this one has the full self-driving feature which is kind of misleading it's not full self-driving but it is the very advanced adaptive cruise control system and it doesn't really navigate on autopilot so we'll actually get off of exits for you and everything automatically to so it'll drive itself if you're going all highway you know much of the time of course you still have your hands on the wheel and be paying attention but you know we'll do the steering and the braking and accelerating for you which is very cool moving on we have the music portion here of it and that's also very different and completely you know strange for a normal car buyers because you know you go into it here and there's a few different options so you have streaming which is a you know Tesla's own streaming service and I believe this is free no matter what and I don't think it has ads or anything but there is no satellite radio here in the tell so you can't get it it's not even option you have regular FM radio you don't have AM radio either so your music options come down to FM radio Tesla's own streaming service or streaming Bluetooth from your phone in that case you could do you know Spotify or whatever from your phone but you're not gonna see that display on here unfortunately other than just your basic you know the title of the track and stuff there's also tune in I'm not sure you know how that works but so those are your three options so if you're an audiophile although you know you do have the very quiet interior of this vehicle and it does have a premium sound system here in the higher versions of the model 3 you don't have any options for a wired in source at all there's no auxiliary jack there all of USB Jack's in this vehicle are charge only they will not actually transfer data so you can't play music off of your phone through a USB so wired in source is not an option and those who are real audio files really comes in music you know they want to have a wired in source and you don't have that option here unfortunate there isn't any kind of SD slot there's an any kind of CD Drive nothing so you have to have a wireless connection from either the internet or your phone to have music which is a little bit of a downside but so far even the streaming service here from Tesla sounds really high-quality so for 99% of people it probably won't be an issue but if you do love music you know it might be better you know in other vehicles of course with higher-end stereos then you can't have the wired in source but otherwise it's great it's very easy to navigate here the only thing I will say though is the volume control is all the way in the bottom right corner here of the vehicle and I honestly wish that was moved to the bottom left here so as closest to you because it's kind of a reach in order to change the volume there or even put it in the middle would be kind of nice so that both passenger and driver could use it easily and but it's pretty responsive you know with this screen you can also drag around the volume if you want to change it quicker but then moving on to that we have another little mini area here which has a calendar other little apps and stuff then you have your heated seat controls but you don't have to go into a submenu for now you can if you want by hitting the climate button and then going into the seats but you don't have to do that but that's how you turn on the air conditioning and stuff through that climate button and then also that's how you change those air vents you drag it around and it moves it appropriately and so that's gonna take a little trial and error to get right but it's interesting you notice you can't even physically control the air vents you have to go through the screen it's just kind of a wild it's you know it's a lot of stuff all in the screen but it's really not bad and I actually love this setup more than I was expecting to and like I said I've I still would miss ways personally if I owned one of these but other than that it's really a awesome setup there's also lots of Easter eggs here in the test let's say you see this little tee at the top you hit that and then you can pull down and then that's when you'll see all these things so you have like a fort mode and so you can do fart on demand it just does that it's very cute I'll but you know if you don't take life super seriously stuff like this can be really fun and again just it's it's what separates Tesla from the rest no other car company in a million years would put something like this into a car but Tesla does there's all kinds of stuff you can haul so there's a sketch pad you know there's a fireplace this whole display will be a fireplace there's Atari games you can have it look like you're driving on Mars there's Christmas stuff they always we're adding stuff more cowbell I mean it's a really just pretty brilliant and hilarious and so if you like little toys and quirks and Easter eggs and stuff you have a boatload of them here in the Tesla and again it's just one of the more fun things about Tesla you know that it just it's a very different car company they're very quick to roll out updates and stuff like for example there's the dog mode and so there's all I mean I could spend probably an hour going through all the little features and quirks here of the Tesla here but those are just a couple of the highlights getting back to some more practical stuff though a storage space here in the Tesla is a really amazing I mean it's unmatched in its segment and honestly it's I think it's even better than most like three row crossovers that are family friendly so first off on the doors here you have a large pocket with a bottle holder which is great to see coming over to the center here you have this massive area that splits two different directions the top part goes up in the bottom part opens back here and so you see this wireless charging pad so if you don't pay $100 to have that there that's an option otherwise you can lift that up and you will see it goes all the way back this is just a massive bin I mean you can fit like a big purse or you know you know like a couple quarts of milk in there or whatever you want and there's 2 e 2 USB Jack's back there as well but if you have this wireless charging pad you I have to plug both of those into there also you have two cupholders here what you're an awesome you know just good placement for those and you the center armrest which is pretty nice and softly padded you open that up and you see first off this normal sized bin which is a good amount of space on its own but then you can lift this up and then you will see that that is a massive area that again is pretty deep and goes even farther back then you know the cutoff you see here for the plastic and so really nice usable space there there's also a traditional power outlet in there too which is great to have that and so I mean as far as you know upfront storage space already this vehicle is better than just about anything else out there and that's part of the luxury you get with not having any kind of drivetrain here you cannot you can to fill all this stuff with storage bins instead of transmissions and stuff like that and so anyway I mean fantastic as far as that goes backseat here and the Tesla Model 3 is also very good so again those seats are so soft again I feel like I'm sitting on marshmallows and that's not even an exaggeration that it's actually how it feels it's so soft and anyway I'm 5 foot 9 me sitting behind myself I have about 3 to 4 inches of leg room to spare back there and so a really spacious back seat you also have plenty of headroom you have a glass roof here and you can see it goes all the way back it's a continuous piece of glass from the middle of the roof all the way to the trunk lid there and so and then the glass continues you just have that Center pillar there with your map lights and then otherwise this whole front area is all glass too so a very airy feeling interior for sure that combined with these bright white seats I mean this is the lightest cabin I've been in a while I think and so other things to note here that you have pockets in those doors back there you also have air vents when you look forward and two USB Jack's nicely placed at the top there as well and also if you look you'll see that there is a cutout there for feet for a for the middle passenger and I mean I've never seen that in a car before my life I mean you can actually fit your feet underneath of that Center company there and that's great and so that means that you could actually very comfortably fit three people back there every day and it wouldn't be a hardship because that middle person still has ample legroom there and they also for the heated rear seats it's usually in most car as the outpour bare seats that are heated and the middle seat doesn't have any heat this the middle seat actually has heat and it is also adjustable independent of the other two seats back there and so this is actually a true five seater all day every day if you want it to be and so that's great if you don't want to use the middle seat there then you do have a fold-down center armrest there with two cupholders built into it it's over all that back seat is just fantastic I don't get any better honestly trunk space in the Tesla is again unlike any other vehicle other than of course other electric cars so first you have that massive trunk which on its own you know would be right in line with most midsize family sedans totally plentiful amount of space um a little cut out there on the left hand side and then to add to that you open up the lower floor there and then you'll see a massive well and you can fit tons of stuff in there too it's also where the charger resides if you want to store it back there and so if that were it if that's all it was it was just that trunk that would already be best in class for any vehicle in this you know size class but that's only half the story here and the Tesla because then you look forward and you have the front or front trunk and that is also pretty large now it's not quite as large as what you see in like some supercars or something or something like Porsches that have you know a little bit of a deeper well there but you still have a ton of space in there to fit all kinds of stuff you know groceries or duffle bags any kind of you know moderately sized stuff I don't know you could fix like full-size suitcases or anything in there but you know it is a really nice extra amount of space there no matter how you look at it this is hands-down the best amount of cargo space in a vehicle in this segment you know by a long shot I mean it is far in a way way more space and so overall it makes the test look very easy to live with and just knocks it out of the park as far as Road you know capability and just being able to haul anything you want to haul speaking of hauling if you do when I whole long things the rear seats do also fold flat as well and that gives you even more space if you need it alright let's turn it on and go for a drive the Tesla here basically is always on whenever you unlock it and you know open it up it has everything on because it's of course fully electric so it just leaves everything on normally so basically all you have to do now is first Keys go you have either a card you can hold here or you have your phone and you can pair that up and then your phone can always just work as the you know key to the car which is kind of wild but if you want you can just leave this in your wallet or something and then you never have to pull out a key either way but then all you do is just push that on the stock for drive here and then you start going so there's nothing to do it's kind of wild there is no startup alright so setting off here in Tesla Model 3 so um so much stuff to take in I guess first we can talk about the visibility here which is phenomenal I mean you have a very low dashboard and so you set a massive windshield the a-pillar is thicker than I was expecting honestly it's pretty wide and then you also have a little speaker here and so it's a little chalky but because this is so low it doesn't really hurt visibility and it's nice that the mirrors do kind of come off of the door a little bit so you do have a pretty good at you know angle around that mirror so overall very good visibility forward you know the sides is great and view of the back is also great as well since you have that one giant piece of glass so your only limitation is really that rearview mirror and pulling out onto a main road here now I think the first thing you have to talk about is how quiet it isn't here I mean it it's it's as quiet as most luxury vehicles quieter than a lot of luxury vehicles honestly and so far that's because you don't have the engine and so it's just there's it it's so seamless citizenship no transmission or anything it's of course instant torque here with a electric motor and so everything is so responsive throttle response is immediate of course and very sensitive to now you can go into this menu here in the screen and change the sport mode and that also can be changed for steering and so there's different is also chill for the throttle if you want if you want to have it more when I save electrons coming so you're gonna get your Mustang gonna be so confused after you driving this right here riding on this is his vehicle that he graciously allowed me to review I've been wanting him to review this cuz I have not seen him floor this car yet so I'm just as excited as you guys when he does finally floor it for his reaction yeah it's gonna be funny other stores so yeah so you can change all that stuff but it's it's really a pretty natural driving as far as once you get used to the region now you can turn that off that's another thing now Sophia prefers to have that on because you can basically do almost one pedal driving it really bothered me at first but once you kind of get used to it like the one pedal thing is really nice and all and you just realize all the other brands there regen is weak compared to Tesla's it would be cool to have paddle shifters that change it up though you know yeah like I think Honda does that when you are volt to Chevy did it with the vulgar you can pull Nero easy you can do that yeah I mean I guess that custom adjustability where you can custom tailor it would be nice there's there's little tweaks here and there but I kinda just you get used to it pretty quick and you're kind of like honestly when I Drive the Porsche I miss or other cars I miss like the brief doesn't the regen braking yeah it seems your brakes ooh yeah so we're going around a couple of corners here and one thing is I love the sport steering – it really is nice and weighty you know it's very quick steering it's dartie cuz I don't know you've you've driven a Model S like them all as the steering is like dead I feel like this cars steering is a very sports car like it's some people have said it's too dirty but I think it's perfect for what it is yeah I mean we just drove the super yesterday and this is even way quicker drama than that yeah that's good do you know the exact steering ratio I am Not sure I know that the performance has a slightly faster steering ratio I want to say and that the rut the suspension is lowered I think like a half an inch compared to being nervous it almost feels as quick as like a Julia or something like it's really dirty but it feels great and yeah I mean you know really says this is an electric vehicle that's all there is a talked about this phone is like sorry there's no engine noise I can't talk about a transmission I can't talk about power delivery like nothing you know we're gonna have some quarters here we can try and you know a sample that a little bit more but yeah because that is one thing these are around 40 100 pounds I believe this one's a flat 4000 yeah okay so yeah I mean it's heavier than you know like a three series or a c-class probably by a little bit but not too bad does it feel heavier to you when you're driving it um you know it feels weighty and like substantial but not in like a holding me back way right it just feels like you're driving something a little bit I guess kind of like a beamed up you like a six years or something where it feels very like solid all right for the moment you all been waiting for I'm gonna turn onto this straight right here and see how it does I'm ready here we go that was actually like a roller coaster my stomach kind of goes back there say that about like supercars sometimes but now this is like completely different it's just actually it feels like what it looks like when you hit the nos and fast furious so anyway the Tesla Model 3 here speaking of specs as 450 horsepower 471 pound-feet of torque 0 to 60 is 3.2 seconds and you can basically do that every time no professional driver need you have all-wheel drive you have you know no trickery it's just you hit the gas and it kills and so you can actually experience 3.2 seconds 0-60 in a vehicle that's only 60 grand that's the crazy thing it is a lot cheaper than m3 yeah way cheaper and I mean m3 zone we dream about doing 3.2 seconds 0-60 s so this is I mean amazing if that was just a little just first I should warn you there secure your camera ratchet straps the whole business oh man this is crazy no I'm like flushed in like War I was speechless wipers did it I was conscious like really is it really this fast oh but that's why the regen braking so strong because you can floor it then let go and you're not speeding anymore yeah just scrub it off and it's stealthy there's nothing there's no noise so the cops you know they don't they really don't hear you doing this yeah like we do in your Mustang thing the whole block knows about it this yeah you can be sneaky it's great yeah I don't know that's basically it I suppose drives like you're speechless fantastic I don't know we have a couple of quarters here we can try out the handling a little bit this one's nice and tight see how you move about summer tires on this one too so yeah 235 wide Michelin Pilot Sport flores's anomie and it had tons of grip you're super low center of gravity with those batteries just you know like a skateboard style there on the floor so I mean it really felt nice and flat there's no drama I mean you got 20-inch wheels too so it really limits any kind of flex I think yes so i haven't taken this car out to the track yet I mean I'm dying to I just been so busy but I want to try out the track mode because I mean this thing supposedly will drift and you feel it from we drive like drive it's like very sporty and like confident feeling you know it doesn't feel big at all it doesn't really feel that heavy either yeah honestly like I think I'm three probably feels about this heavy honestly and it's just yeah it's a totally different feeling though like it's hard it should be comparable to like an m3 but this is just like hands down like so much quicker then it's just like I feel like I should be just comparing this a supercar say now like it's just wild and this is a completely different type of thing is like for example this is very similar horsepower to my bullet 480 horsepower in my bullet and that's like you gotta wind it out you got a shift you wait for the power I mean this thing would blow the doors off of my bullet I was sad when I got my came in because this thing will smoke it all day long I don't like that makes me sad but at the same time I just I enjoy driving this thing because it's so easy to access the speed yeah like and with the all-wheel drive like in the wet I think you haven't driven this in the wet yeah but in the wet it doesn't even have really any tire spin wow that's not shocked about it it's like Tesla's all-wheel drive system in just the way it just delivers the power there's there's very little drama so if you're looking for a wheel spin sorry it's not really here but yeah but you do get like face distorting thrust everyone seems a wheel drive like you know Mercedes talking about going all will drive for even the AMG models and BMW with the m5 and everyone's going that anyway it's like you know Wilson's gonna be almost a thing of the past pretty soon too but how was it in the snow whenever you kind of daily drove it in the winter and stuff so I actually put just like all season tires on I should have put winters but I just did all seasons but yeah like the like the all-wheel-drive system in this car it's it's very good like it's got independent motors so like the the rear motor is technically stronger so the car has a rear drive feel to it which is what I ever liked because all the other V's there front drive yeah like they just they feel like economy cars yeah alright so now we're all on the highway and a couple other things I want to mention here about this vehicle first off so as far as blind spot monitoring goes we do have this display which will show you you know where vehicles are at and also you know the car can make its own lane changes whenever you're on autopilot so with that you know it will kind of make sure that you're not you know making the wrong kind of land changes and making sure that you're keeping an eye on your surroundings but it would still be nice if some type of indicator in the mirrors because that's where I'm looking whenever I'm looking to see if I want to change lanes is in the mirrors it's time to look back at the screen to make sure that's okay isn't ideal but one thing now we're out on the highway here I'm going to put the autopilot on and we're hitting gonna be hitting some traffic here so we'll see how it does with that keep my hands on the wheel because of course you still have to here with the Tesla at least for now we'll see with the full self driving thing when they roll that out if they eliminate that but it does a good job of you know being like a normal adaptive cruise control system where it all you know follow and match speed but I have noticed it just in the few little minutes I've used it so far that it is very responsive so a lot of other systems give a lot more distance or even if their closest setting they still are a little more like to pick up speed quicker and break this is this is able to do it pretty abruptly and still does it in a smooth way that it's tilled it feels pretty good other things that feel good is the ride quality that's one thing I think part of it is because you have these seats that really nicely soak up any of the bumps that you have but it's pretty cool whenever you are in the adaptive cruise mode here how it will visualize all the cars ahead of you and so it'll act it can actually show that it's seeing more than one car in front so it can see a couple of cars ahead which is very cool and even show you what's coming up behind you and stuff so that is telling me I need to put some pressure here on the steering wheel it gets a little confused so it just disengaged the autopilot because we're gonna merge type of a lane here where the lane is way too wide and so you even saw the lane squiggling it started to do advanced kind of informs you on everything there's a lot of other cars give you like a warning light this is like here's exactly what you need to do or what you know is going wrong well it gives you more confidence because when you when you can see visually here what the car is seeing you're kind of like okay if the car sees that it should break if it sees that it should break but but yeah it just takes some getting used to look over here another nice thing the even selfie one mentioned earlier is that you don't have to resume once it comes with a full stop with the you know adaptive cruise it will resume on its own which is great so you don't have to a lot of other cars you have to hit the gas again in order to resume the cruise controlling this you don't so you can actually just like not use your feet and it's going to do everything for you which is you know I think if you're in daily traffic like this yep that goes a long way I'm sure I used to get super frustrated with this always cuz this is this is the normal scene here in the DC area but with this car like like your foots kind of just resting and and you see it slows down to a complete stop and then we'll resume pretty fast so I'm just kind of like oh what do I do now I guess I'm gonna go on my phone level three eventually comes here then we can do this legally right I want to see how then how that all plays out and how the regulations play out that's the thing is you know Iran talks about that stuff but you know is the government gonna actually let him do that without lidar and a lot kind of stuff you know love to see it be interesting I think eventually they're gonna have to I mean because other parts of the world like I have like an Audi a8 right now the new one and they that's the first car in the world to have level three autonomy which means I don't have to pay attention but it's not here in America because of the regulations so I think the US will eventually have to catch up yeah it was impressive the little demo video they show though of it doing the city autonomous driving you know so if it can if you can get there I mean it's impressive I just I still feel like I wish that there was more driver monitoring stuff I wish that there was you know the lidar sensors as a backup you know instead of just relying on cameras and stuff this is this ever like bailed on you and like bad weather or anything like that like as far as you know like the sensors getting blocked or the cameras down so yeah in the winter when I had snow buildup it would just kind of flash a warning this as visibility is reduced or something and it wouldn't allow the full adaptive cruise but it tells you everything if there's something wrong it'll tell you but yeah that's kind of a problem when one of those cameras gets covered up which is the same problem in every other car whatever the cameras will get covered up with snow or whatever it'll it'll tell you that the forward collision warning is shut off so that's some bad guys every manufacturer needs to you see go fast yeah I mean I guess you know for our generation it's fine because we all know how to drive stuff but I'm worried that like you know 10 years from now people are gonna get used to it doing everything and it's like wait you have to take over and do what I do and then you know you're just like would be make it even worse you think like snowstorms you have tens of accidents already like with that it's like no one knows how to drive anymore literally does not not a drive that's like we're all just wrecking into everyone cuz no one can control a car basically like kids born today we're gonna we're gonna look back when they're our age and they're like when I was your age I had to drive myself to school like now you guys just punch in your GPS destination it just takes you there you can go to sleep I mean I think the rides great and I mean like I said it's so quiet in here and all the materials on the inside here pretty nice that you know I feel like this this is totally worthy of a $60,000 car yes you don't have the leather and the wood and stuff like my wife's Mercedes has but like I feel like that's still you're not gonna get in this be like wow I got ripped off spending honesty grand on this you know and then you consider the performance it's the same thing with other sports sedans you paying for the performance and I feel like you look at that same way and it's it's totally justifiable yeah I mean you don't even need the performance model to enjoy this car like if you guys just got the dual motor or non-performance that's still four and a half seconds to 60 you know that will smoke a lot of a lot of cars a lot of sports cars and you can just do it all day long and there's no drama but that's I think that's like a beauty of this car like yes it's it's not as luxurious as the other main the other brands like Mercedes or BMW whatnot but it offers a different kind of luxury and that's like the speed the electric the electric lifestyle the tech and then the the self-driving stuff and that's really I think is the key to Tesla success I mean yes they're not perfect no brain is perfect but they they had the I guess the initiative or they had the what's the word I'm looking for the balls to do with this stuff like they had they have the drive to say let's do what all the other brands wouldn't do so until all the other brands catch up Tesla right now they're at the forefront of electric cars which I hate admitting I truly do hate admitting okay it's a free market and they're they're doing it the best and so they're reaping the benefits so I hope they can you know figure out all their you know financial instability is right now and you know become a solid company that can you know last for a long time because that they are you know pioneers of this stuff and that's why everyone's trying to catch up to them because they're willing to do what no one else would and and so I think they're gonna continue leading the charge here you know for at least the next few years until the Germans and stuff try and catch up we'll see what they do but yeah this is this is very impressive and this kind of feel like I'm driving the future you know in a lot of ways but yeah that's basically about eight guys so huge thanks once again to Sophie on here for a girl me review it and if you guys want to follow he's gonna be closing in on 10,000 miles here he's gonna do an update video on that and you know what it's like to own one of these so even if you're a Tesla fanboy you know you can you know follow along with him you know kind of see what it's gonna be like to own one of these over the long haul and you know overall I'm really impressed with it so yeah thank you again thank you guys very much for watching let me know your thoughts on the model 3 in the comments below and I'll see you guys next time take care
their forward collision warning you'll start to see Kim cars here in front of you to the right into the left just representing the lanes and if you're about to hit one the car that car in front of you will go red and make all sorts of sin so it's a nice alert that an accident if however you're too late and the accent is in fact going to happen the car will apply welcome to go real quick for a second I was just trying to get up actually go off sorry a little harder there you go okay I'm just so like he's talking about little that's that this is stop so tells you license plate here this is the bumper okay and this is an indicator of how close we are to that where like the e breaker is hurt when you put it in park everybody go ahead and put a dozen for you automatic so you would never have to do it you can use the mirror at that camera you would like beep if there was even or it would show on here okay you are there we've already show if it was so I really there's no need to hide it or anything no see this is right there you got space just recognizing the sensors is this like um true to like it's not about yes I'm not obviously not shoe size but like you know it's it's rubber that's exactly what you're saying it's not a convention it's not distorted yeah that's what I meant to ask I go you report on really when you go out of this Drive where can you go make it right I don't know why I always feel like when I test drive cars I'm getting like my driver's license in the fall and I'm judging my drive eaters judging okay I'm trying right yes like one of those things like reading elders good you got enough room idea thank you I do have peed a little t-shirt but I feel great when you make this turn you have some space to do that you take your foot off it really does how's that region so you'll learn how to feather in just that a little bit I'm you will you learn to feather the accelerator and then next time I go to drive like a gas car we ever go somewhere I'll be like yeah all over the place how 2015 yeah wasn't already just from our leaf I feel like I'm going right yes yes um wave event I have a hard time driving like a gas card like it's so jumpy but like after this it's gonna be like the notice also when we left off of the accelerator completely the brake light didn't come on because the car slowing down you'll see it in the display in front of you can the people fit off you'll notice let go of it but it seems like it that stops the car that's what you were trying to say to be here it won't stop it completely gonna stop it's about four miles an hour you all need to use your brakes but because of the region feature you will be using the brakes as much and therefore the really like I try like don't look up Rachel her there's really no need to but you probably should because you'd fail your terms I'm sorry if you didn't what do you think him I'm just like it's crazy you think of the windshield I mean it's really cool like the open field definitely I mean does right I'm thinking of Lee and do when you turn 16 like what car he'll be taking is driving it would be such a different I need to get utility command cut off a lot like a church as a matter of driving it birthdays just like in your video leave you'll be regenerating whatever we look at so see what this is goes green here that means you regenerate but you really like weight that you get to I I need to feel the way that you like to drive could you like to wait this light they keep doing it too soon since I'm sure it's okay the Moriya coastal region I'm used to like I guess then I'm just charges my battery did you own the leaf for your feces you please stay we've died and we did the free cuz we wanted we loved the concept of electric cars but we wanted to try it out and then we liked it again and they were giving them up for free so we just did another one and then we've been waiting for like I said we were like okay I think we're ready but we wanted to wait for this one with the kids and everything living with the leaf alone I kind of decided that I was never going to get a gas car so we would rent it you know couple times a year that we would drive out of town rent a gas car and drive out of town and couldn't wait to get back to our Evie yeah but then this this obviously fills the gap and I had a yeah I want a car three months so I had one of these four model s okay after I gave it back I had to go put gas in my car just miss you yeah that's the thing it's really nice timing to gas in your car especially with kids because like the little babies you know that everything the car stops a try get fancy are we complete mega right there we go um so that's been a big benefit like you can't just believe it's not get all the way up to the left have to make this turn okay there we are now I said it's not a training car is perfect there is a tournament that I keep slowing down way too much than just thought uses of it they're dirty anyone I'm back it in yeah thank you that's what they do if it's not a great backer in a
I think I think San Francisco's basically be the next electric Detroit the Google generations has access to all this knowledge so it's incredibly easy for you know these innovative minds to hybridize ideas iteration this is some around 400 different iterations we just took the car we took all the benefits of a car the safety inconvenience and we took me up the efficiency in the romance of a motorcycle and we just kind of put them together so this is our prototype c1 it's just a rough sketch model basically it is a self bouncing fully enclosed two-wheeled vehicle that goes up to 100 miles an hour gets 220 miles per charge it's fully electric two-wheel drive what we're doing is we're actually using gyroscopes and flywheels much like how the Hubble Space Telescope works the gyroscopes make it almost impossible to knock over the vehicle state is attended by how you steer when you steer the steering wheel the vehicle tilts to the right angle it's basically like a little robot this is where we first started as a 12-pound Jarrah that spins at 5,000 rpms since then we'll be trying to grown-up and now we're looking at a 40 pound gyro that spins at 12 thousand rpms max this puts out about almost a thousand foot-pounds of torque so it's substantially more powerful than this let's put out maybe 20 foot pounds so we've grown up since cinema Berg with little prototypes and gyros like this we now have this so this is the c1 this is our first full-scale driving prototype it's like an alpha prototype so here are the gyros right here so the counter rotate counter process the last place you could buy gyros actually is the International Space Station Honeywell makes a set of gyros out of ten million dollars these costs significantly less than that and this what actually creates all the stability so as long as it stays Oh some what's the next step it's having a computer smart enough to be able to figure out yo you know what is the office obviously the handle what's gonna happen next is smarter controller more sensors faster flywheels and then a lot more stability higher resolution so you know we have one sensor right now it's all balancing on one side how many will you have it's on the front heavy today I mean it's really a robot so the hearts of part of it is just all the electronics that are arranged here so right at the top you've got all the computer that's doing all the work telling the gyros what to do they're giving instructions to the motor controllers which are exactly moving the gyros as we need them to be and then all this is just the landing gear for when it's parked is a pneumatic system but the real brains of the whole thing by the gyros and they counter rotate counter precess and generate the talk that the vehicle needs to stay upright in all situations every little input of the road whether it's on a camber or on an incline but there's a little bump in the road anything can upset two-wheeled vehicles yeah but you're technically balancing a motorcycle right now with a lot of help with a lot of normally from a motorcycle you're constantly adjusting we have to make sure it's the gyros that do all that rather than the person we don't want the driver to be squirming around making sure this is balanced you should be as comfortable in this do the work and we've got to tell the gyros how to work welcome to our lab this is this is where we work and we've got a range of tools some old gyros and some old guy row parts this was a very much lighter even though it's quite heavy much lighter than the current gyro and a different configuration and I think as we develop that we'll go to a slightly heavier one that spins even faster and gives us even more torque and therefore keeps the vehicle even more stable than that one the prior to joining lit motors I was with BMW for about 25 years obviously working for lit it's somewhat different to working for BMW I mean if the engineering crew I there was about 20 thousand engineers at BMW you want to think outside the box this is a completely different product it's very much a robot the automotive robot using ARM processors smarts basically like kind of built like a smartphone where it cutter recompiles then like you know you can download a new firmware it's got an in totally different interior that you totally interactive you access incredibly important part of the extra development of this I mean this is a future just watch the light here fine and then still rehearse it that's what yep yeah this is Ripper I like to use this watch the light here fine we've got to face it which one I set up another car company and that's not a super task in itself suppose we started putting everything on to long rolls of paper there just sketching ideas out sketching concepts sketching what needed to happen from a production point of view at least a saying this is a lot less complex than the car the number of parts in this is is ridiculously small compared to a complete vehicle we're drastically of reducing our parts count basically of what would take a vehicle like a golf you're the part looking around 14,000 part something's it's it's pretty significant the matter parts so with our vehicle we see that we could basically reduce our parts count by four than that if not less because it's basically a rolling iPhones this vehicle is all electric so there's very little like moving mechanical parts except for the steering and the brakes and the controllers all this basic like your phone so that's why our parts count solo so doing it now doing it here in Silicon Valley in California is really a key part of where we're aiming this to be this is our first prototype because this is a bit smaller it has less parts and because it has less parts means less manufacturing less engineering easier to assemble it's gonna be a lower price point for the consumer bragging experience is going to change you are talking about a new product mm-hmm when you think about it it's going to be also a part of your augment reality as a user or I mean that could be part of it I mean the interface everything you're gonna see is gonna be completely different like a full touchscreen display it's gonna be something that's gonna meet the expectation of this new iPhone generation it's telling you things like feet are down yeah I mean those landing gear so that would take place of an automatic kickstand yes so you actually have to Wayne to get that deploy so you can get out so the gyros aren't on all the time this is it's kind of a little bit like an airplane it's like driving around in a fighter jet but on the ground but it's very cost-effective 35 miles so range mm-hmm the range is 200 miles on a single charge this will cost you about 97 cents for one charge so you know if you look compared to a gallon of gas you're gonna be getting around 800 miles on one gallon of gas I really kind of want to be more of like Ford model-t in 21st century Henry Ford made cars affordable for the masses right now cars electric cars are not affordable to the masses well I just see this is the next logical step in the progression of transportation
or I have a look at this this is the Tesla Model X it is new to Victoria police's fleet it is gorgeous and it is the first fully electric law enforcement vehicle in Australia and this is inspector Stuart Bailey to have a talk with us about it Stuart this is pretty flashing off with business what we had it I end up at the drivers say Oh wonderful it's so good and what do you make of this this is this is a terrific oh this is the future there's no the about this this is a fully electric car this going to change the our fleet in Victoria please I can see in ten years palm that every one of their cars will be electric car and can you imagine that we don't paying into the fuel just electricity which is actually a quarter of the cost as we pay me out for a petrol driven car this is just a normal normal police car we just want to say working its natural environment if you like the place to go through the normal Road policing enforcement power journeys that this spring will allow us to put our mobile data terminal onto this screen on our body worn cameras teeny plates with this screen per video can you pay for this screen our automatic number plate recognition will air mobility devices we can mirror onto this as well so it's a one-stop-shop tremendous okay this is our variable messaging sign on our light bar on the roof so we can scroll through there and pick whatever message we want to get to our road users we've got close to both the Tesla and Victoria police engineers that will be coming out and looking at the data coming out of this and speaking to our police members to fine understand what is working on what we need to change how does it go it goes very close it can get to a hundred commas now in 4.9 seconds this has been independently tested and this has been determined to enter the best power in our fleet in performance braking and handling it is the best car it is the most stable part we have an arrow at present on they're gonna see it right we have before ever predominantly our southeast State Highway Patrol members will be taking this to best coast they'll be taken to the tribe and they put on the also work in Casey Indian on PSA posture thanks very much for that it can where's the button for the lights and sirens come on so we've got the control center here but would be to ground that on to a system and that is our first part of the integration on to well yeah now I don't care which one do I hit just an initial [Applause]
aw lives with his family and aging father in a large house in Schenectady in the garage he keeps a collection of automobiles the most famous is the Baker electric car and steam automobile this car belonged to my great-grandfather ewic jr. when he was in Schenectady it's a Baker electric from 1901 vintage we think and it's been totally restored my father did the mechanical restoration and I finished it with the cosmetic restoration it runs a it'll go about 25 miles an hour it has five forward speeds and a tiller steering mechanism here and it has batteries in front and and back it's a 24 volt system and it was used by aw rice at the Schenectady GE and on the front of it is a parking sticker badge metal parking badge from the G parking lot there you
