Rose Orthopedic & Spine Center: In and Out of SUV, left knee

– [Instructor] In this
video, we will demonstrate how to enter and exit an SUV after having your left knee replaced. Before you approach the
vehicle, have the driver slide the passengers seat
back as far as it goes. Depending on how far you
are able to bend your knee, it may also be more comfortable if the driver reclines the seat. Back up to the passengers seat until you feel the SUV
behind your right leg. Step your left leg out in
front of you for comfort. Release the walker, and
place your right hand on the back of the
seat, and your left hand on the seat itself. Lower yourself onto the seat. Scoot yourself back on the seat. You can place your right
leg onto the side of the SUV to assist with scooting back. Begin to pivot into the SUV. If it is too uncomfortable
to bend your left knee enough for your foot to clear
the door, you can scoot up onto the reclined seat back. Once your foot is in the
car, you can slide down into the seat. To exit the vehicle, pivot to the right, bring your legs out of the SUV, and scoot to the edge of the seat. Once your feet are planted on the ground, have the driver place your
walker in front of you. Step your left foot out for comfort, and push up to standing from the seat. Do not grab onto the door at any point, as it is not stationary.
