ABOUT ON THE CBS 17 NEWS APP. YOU CAN KEEP UP WITH ALL THE BREAKING NEWS, WEATHER, TRAFFIC AND MUCH MORE. THAT IS ONE OF THREE SERIOUS MOTORCYCLE CRASHES WE HAVE SEEN IN WAKE COUNTY IN THE PAST WEEK. TWO OF THOSE CRASHES WERE DEADLY. CBS 17 KELLY KENNEDY IS DIGGING DEEPER INTO WHAT MAY BEHIND THE RECENT UPTICK. MARIO HAS BEEN RIDING FOR 40 YEARS AND ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION HE THOUGHT TO HIMSELF THIS COULD BE IT. I THANK GOD, I DO. I THANK GOD THAT I CAN RIDE ANOTHER DAY. Reporter: THE CLOSEST CALL CAME A FEW YEARS AGO. I WAS — THE PERSON THAT HIT ME WAS IMPATIENT. WHEN HE TURNED, GOES I HIT THE CAR, WENT THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD, CONCUSSION, BROKEN RIBS AND I BROKE MY LEG. BUT THAT HASN’T STOPPED HIM FROM GETTING BACK ON HIS BIKE. JUST THIS WEEK WE HAVE SEEN THREE MOTORCYCLE CRASHES IN WAKE COUNTY. TWO OF THOSE FATAL. THE MOST RECENT SENT FOUR TO THE HOSPITAL. ACCORDING TO NCDOT, THERE WERE 136 MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES IN NORTH CAROLINA IN 2017. IN 2018 THAT NUMBER CLIMBED TO 165. A 21% INCREASE. MARK HENDRICKS MANAGES TOBACCO ROAD HARLEY DAVIDSON IN HARLEY. HE NOTICED THE INCREASE, TOO. YOU HATE WHEN IT DOESN’T TURN OUT LIKE IT’S SUPPOSED TO. HE BELIEVES THE REASON WE ARE SEEING MORE MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES IN NORTH CAROLINA IS THE INCREASE IN POPULATION AND JUST MORE PEOPLE RIDING MOTORCYCLES. HE TELLS ME OVER THE PAST YEAR THEY HAVE SEEN A 15% INCREASE IN SALES. THE BIGGEST ONE IS THE INCREASE IN POPULATION FOR SURE. THERE IS MORE CARS ON THE ROAD, MORE CROWDED.
