Breakfast on the Bus – Unique Way to Increase Participation

[ MUSIC ]>>HI, I’M JENICE MOMBER, THE FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR OF KALEVA NORMAN DICKSON SCHOOL DISTRICT. THIS SCHOOL YEAR, WE TRIED SOMETHING NEW TO HELP STUDENTS GET THE NOURISHMENT THEY NEED: “BREAKFAST ON THE BUS.” IT’S BEEN A BIG SUCCESS. EACH SCHOOL DAY, THIRTY-ONE OF OUR BRETHREN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE BUSSED TO SCHOOL, AND THEN TO THE CADILLAC CAREER CENTER. TO CATCH THE BUS, STUDENTS HAVE TO GET UP VERY EARLY, AND MOST DON’T HAVE TIME TO EAT BREAKFAST AT HOME. AND THAT’S WHERE “BREAKFAST “ON THE BUS” COMES IN. BEFORE STUDENTS DEPART FOR THE CAREER CENTER, WE DELIVER A WIDE VARIETY OF BREAKFAST ITEMS TO THE BUS. INCLUDING HOT FOODS, LIKE PANCAKES AND WAFFLES. THE BUS DRIVER TRACKS MEAL ATTENDANCE, AND THE STUDENTS TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN TRASH, AND CARRY THE EMPTY TOTES AND COOLERS BACK TO THE SCHOOL. “BREAKFAST ON THE BUS” IS A GREAT WAY TO MAXIMIZE SCHOOL MEAL PARTICIPATION, AND IMPROVE STUDENT HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
